Activity description

The African Union Commission (AUC), in response to a request issued by the Republic of Benin, co-organised a three days Consultative Meeting on the Domestication and Implementation of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), between 12 and 14 March 2019. The objective of the meeting was to raise awareness on the ATT among the national stakeholders, and assess the national frameworks that will have to be put in place to ensure the full and effective implementation at the national level.

Project description

The African Union actively participated in the international efforts towards the adoption of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), notably through the adoption of the African Common Position by decision Assembly/AU/Dec.472 (XX) of the 20th Ordinary Session, held on 27 – 28 January 2013 in Addis Ababa. Subsequently, and in the spirit of acknowledging the aim of the ATT to establish norm for conventional arms trade and prevent diversion, the AU Assembly and its Peace and Security Council continue to call for the universalization and effective implementation of the ATT, both within its Member States and globally. The ATT is also considered an important tool to advance the implementation of the AU Master Roadmap for Silencing the Guns in Africa by the year 2020. In this respect, the Commission focuses on promoting the universality of the ATT and building capacities for its implementation.
